You may install Android on PC, provided that your computer, notebook or netbook is compatible with the compiled version of Android for PC processors (x86). You will end up with Android as your computer’s operative system, totally replacing the Windows, Linux or even Mac operative system that -probably- came with it.
Current best source for Android operative system version compiled for x86 computers is the open source project called Android-x86. At the time of this writing, all their efforts of porting Android on PC are focused on the latest Android version 4.x (or “Ice Cream Sandwich” as it is called by Google). At the time of this writing, the latest downloadable version of Android on PC available is Android-x86 4.0 RC1 (Release Candidate 1), which is pretty much usable.
Previous to install Android on PC: Supported Hardware
In the project’s website, they got an extensive supported hardware chart, including most netbooks and notebooks. Most notably, the list include most of the Asus EEE line of netbooks as fully supported, and also the Sony Vaio UX. Needless to say that a touchscreen is more than desirable in order to install Android on PC and get a good usability “out of the box”.
Install Android on PC Vmware
If you want to get a taste of Android on PC without much compromise, you may want to install Android on PC inside a vmware virtual machine. When creating the virtual machine that will allow you to test Android on PC, you must select an IDE disk type, as the current Android kernel does not support SCSI storage systems. After taking care of this caveat, you may install Android on PC, safely testing it on a virtual environment.
